Girls Coach Girls Run is comprised of a two-tiered curriculum: discussions and activities that promote positive self-esteem, interpersonal competencies and healthy lifestyles; and an exercise curriculum that prepares girls to run a 5K. High school Head Coaches and 8th grade Assistant Coaches undergo an extensive training program before implementing the lessons with the 4th grade girls.
Eighth graders benefit from a 6-week leadership training, led by high school Head Coaches and supervised by professional educators and facilitators. The Head Coaches lead Assistant Coaches in activities and discussions with two goals: one, to engage 8th grade girls in thinking about their own healthy choices and two, to help prepare the young leaders to mentor the 4th graders later in the Spring. During the 4th Grade Component of the Program, Assistant Coaches help Head Coaches implement the lessons with the younger girls.
