Program Description
Girls Coach Girls Run (GCGR) is comprised of a two-tiered curriculum: discussions and activities that promote positive self-esteem, interpersonal competencies, and healthy lifestyles; and an exercise curriculum that prepares girls to run a non-competitive 5K. High school Juniors and Seniors serve as Head Coaches and 8th graders as Assistant Coaches; all Coaches undergo an extensive training program before implementing the lessons with the 4th grade girls.

High school Head Coaches benefit from a 26-hour leadership training. During the first 14 hours, Head Coaches are trained by professionals in the fields of education and social work; during the final 12 hours, the Head Coaches themselves lead much of the training of the 8th grade Assistant Coaches. The training works toward two goals: one, to engage coaches in thinking about their own healthy choices, and two, to help prepare the young leaders to mentor the 4th graders later in the spring. During the 4th grade component of the program, Head Coaches, with the assistance of the 8th graders, implement the lessons with the younger girls.

Program Logistics & Requirements
